Potatoes in Tamarind Sauce

5 large potatoes
4 large onions
1/2 cup tamarind juice
1 tsp sugar
1 1/2 tsps chilli powder
1/2 cup oil
salt to taste
Boil potatoes and remove the skins till softy taking care not to overcook them . Peel and chop into small cubes.
Peel and chop onions into very small piece.
Heat 1/2 cup oil in a pan . Add onion and stir - fry till browned .
Add tamarind pulp, chillii powder , sugar and stir the sauce.Add water, if necessary, to make the sauce thick but smooth.
Add chopped potatoes , mashing some pieces with the back of a laddle.
Add water if needed. Add salt and simmer till well blended. serve with puris.
